The Dave Brubeck Quartet – Time Out

Time Out was The Dave Brubeck Quartet's fourteenth album for Columbia Records and his breakthrough. The album was recorded at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York City and released on December 14, 1959. Brubeck and his quartet (Brubeck - piano, Paul Desmond - alto sax, Eugene Wright - bass and Joe Morello - drums) had released a number of live albums recorded at colleges and several albums of jazz covers but Time Out was a fully formed concept album based upon the use of time signatures that were unusual for jazz.

The album peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard pop albums chart, and was the first jazz album to sell a million copies. The single "Take Five" from the album was also the first jazz single to sell one million copies. In 2005, Time Out was one of 50 recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry.

If you are thinking about starting a journey into the world of Jazz, Time Out is a great starting point.
